The Israeli army said Thursday it killed Sinwar during fighting on Wednesday and confirmed his death through a DNA test.

Sinwar was one of the main architects of the attack on Israel last October, which sparked an Israeli ground invasion and a conflict that affected countries across the Middle East.

Mr. Trudeau called Sinwar a “brutal leader” of a group that Canada considers a terrorist organization that “sought to destroy Israel and launched senseless and devastating terrorist attacks against civilians across the region.”

The Prime Minister also reiterated Canada’s call for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Earlier, Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris said Sinwar’s death “gives us the opportunity to finally end the war in Gaza.”
