the Alpes-Maritimes department placed on red alert this Friday

Météo- has placed the Alpes-Maritimes on red rain-flood alert for the day of Friday October 18. The alert comes into effect this Thursday, 6 p.m.

Announcing “exceptional rainfall” in the Alpes-Maritimes, Météo-France placed the department on red “rain-flood” alert for Friday. The alert is valid from this Thursday, October 17, from 6 p.m.

A new rainy and stormy episode sets in late this Thursday afternoon, bringing with it “strong rainy intensities” which could cause 60 to 80 mm of accumulations in a short time, or even 100 mm locally on the terrain.

For the day of Friday, the Alpes-Maritimes are also on orange alert for floods and thunderstorms. The risk of flooding is high because this episode occurs when the soils are already saturated due to the heavy rains that have fallen in recent days.

The red alert describes a situation in which “very significant flooding is possible, including in areas that rarely flood.” Road traffic conditions can be very poor, electricity cut off and the risk of sanitation networks overflowing is high.

In this context, Météo-France recommends staying at home and above all not using your car, even to pick up your children from school. You should also stay away from waterways, bridges and basements and instead take refuge at the highest accessible point.
