Namur Assizes: Daniel Gilles found guilty of the murder of Yohanne Giltay

Earlier in the day, Me Preumont had pleaded guilty for his client, at 2 p.m. “Mr Gilles is not asking you to answer “no” to the question of whether he committed murder on Yohanne Giltay on the night of February 8 to 9, 2022. He pleads guilty.

Me Preumont recalled that, according to the psychiatrist who looked into Daniel Gilles, “his powers of discernment were seriously impaired but not abolished at the time of the events“, due to his consumption of alcohol, cannabis and cocaine, in the form of sniffing and crack.”Mr Gilles is also mentally responsible for his actions“, further clarified the accused’s lawyer.

I understand the family’s need for logical explanations. But there is an element of irrationality in this trial. The accused is unable to provide all the explanations“, added the lawyer.

Earlier in the day, Attorney General Mottiaux asked the jurors to find Gilles guilty of the murder of his partner, Yohanne Giltay.

The latter had reminded the jurors of the constituent elements of the murder: the death of the victim, but also the weapon used, the number of blows delivered or the part of the body which was targeted, knowingly. “A kitchen knife was used to give 54 blows to the face, neck and chest.

The debates on the sentence to be imposed on the murderer will begin Friday morning.
