Dozens of countries have committed to a Lausanne Appeal to make land contaminated by mines and explosives in Ukraine safe again and also usable for agriculture. On Thursday, a document was unveiled during the ministerial on this issue.

It’s not just another statement. It’s a commitment,” Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis told the participants. Mine clearance is the start of a more secure Ukraine and to sustainably restore the country, he said.

The population will be put at the center of efforts. Its safety and care for victims must be guaranteed through “high-quality and safe humanitarian demining activities” and “long-term arrangements,” the document adds. Contaminated land will need to be rehabilitated, essential for “global food security”.

States also undertake to help pilot and produce mine clearance capacities locally. Operational collaboration must be aligned with Ukrainian objectives to clean up the territory. And another wish, innovations in terms of demining must be sought and used by these different States.
