Roger Bouichou, the grandson of the man who, in the 1950s, created a model of the medieval city of Carcassonne, believes that the place of the work is not on the first floor of the old town hall but on the tourist office where there is a lot more traffic.

It is the story of a work of art. From a model made in the 1950s by Jean Bouichou. This wooden reproduction reproduces the City of Carcassonne identically. The houses and buildings inside have been made with the greatest care. This work of the artisan carpenter even had its hour of glory. On March 14, 1953, the medieval city of Carcassonne took off on a plane chartered by Air France heading to the Americas. At the initiative of Dr Jean Girou, president of the Aude Initiative Union, the model then began a journey through the airports of the New World. The miniature flew from Orly to the airports of New York, Washington, Philadelphia and Boston where it was exhibited for the eyes of travelers.

But this hour of glory is over for the grandson of the creator Roger Bouichou, unhappy that since then, it has been installed on the first floor of the old town hall. For him, she would be much better off in a place with more traffic, in plain sight… “No one sees her up there except the newlyweds. She would be better off at the tourist office for example. What’s more, the City is not respecting the contract it made with my grandfather at the era”breathes the septuagenarian.

In the donation contract carried out before a notary in December 1997, jointly signed by Raymond Chésa and Roger Bouichou, it is stipulated as follows: “The model currently given must be exhibited in a place open to the public so that it is accessible.” For Roger Bouichou, this condition is not respected. This is why he wrote to the City on several occasions. Letters in which he expressed the wish that the model be exhibited in a place more suited to its artistic vocation.

Received by Mr. Bès when he was at the cultural center in recent years, he said “hear this request”. But since then, nothing has changed. This is why the Bouichou brothers are coming back to have the model moved. If he would prefer not to come to this, Roger Bouichou reserves the right to take legal action if his request is not heard.

At the City, we believe that the terms of the contract are respected, as the mayor’s office argues. “Where she is, it is the best possible place for her. It is a place with free access where all citizens can go. On the ground floor of the old town hall, it is not possible as large equipment is regularly transported here. As for the idea of the tourist office, it is not possible either due to lack of space.expresses Anne Garouste, from the mayor’s office before adding: “If it bothers Mr. Bouichou, he can recover his grandfather’s model, there is no problem”.
