A gas poisoning at a biotechnology company in China left seven dead and four injured.

At least seven people were killed and four others injured after being poisoned by gas at a biotechnology company in eastern China, state media reported on Sunday.

The incident took place Saturday afternoon at a Weifang Jinshi company building in Shandong province, Xinhua news agency said, citing emergency officials.

Rescuers have been deployed to help survivors and investigations are underway, according to local authorities.

“The injured are currently in stable condition”Xinhua said, citing the local emergency management office in Shouguang city, located about 380 kilometers southeast of the capital Beijing.

Industrial accidents are common in China, often due to poor safety training and lax protocols.

In January, at least eight people were killed after a factory explosion in the eastern province of Jiangsu, according to state media.

In May 2023, nine people were killed in the explosion at a hydrogen peroxide production factory in Liaocheng, located in Shandong province, like the company where Saturday’s explosion took place. (chl/ats)
