A day of disc golf in memory of Karl Tremblay

“Karl Tremblay left a lot of things on the music scene, but he also left a great legacy on the sports scene,” says comedian Étienne Dano about disc golf. To introduce people to this sport that the Cowboys singer was particularly fond of, a charity event will be held on October 26 at L’Assomption. All profits will go to cancer research.

In the last years of his life, Karl Tremblay began playing disc golf a lot. In the midst of a pandemic, the singer really liked the qualities of this very inexpensive outdoor sport. He was so passionate about disc golf that he introduced many artist friends to it, including Jean-François Pauzé, Dumas, Jean-Michel Anctil, Étienne Dano, Louis-José Houde, Adib Alkhalidey, Simon Delisle and Guillaume Pineault.

Karl Tremblay also greatly helped the co-founders of Mission Disc Golf to set up the Phœnix project, a course located in his hometown, in L’Assomption. “It was he who forged links between us and the town of L’Assomption,” mentions the president of Mission Disc Golf, Mathieu Salvail.

In honor of the Cowboys singer, who died almost a year ago, the Phoenix team had the idea of fundraising for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Multiple invitations

“We discussed it with Marie-Annick [Lépine, la veuve de Karl Tremblay]who agreed with the initiative, and she gave us her blessing,” says Mathieu Salvail. The musician should also be present at the event called La Grand’messe Karl Tremblay.

“We are going to send an invitation to the mayor of L’Assomption and we will also take a chance with François Legault, because it is still in his county. If he cannot travel, we hope that he will want to make a contribution,” says Mathieu Salvail.

Comedian Étienne Dano, also a great disc golf enthusiast, helps the organizers with the search for sponsors. On site during the event, he will set up a kiosk for Panak, his online disc golf store. “All profits from that day will go to the cause,” says the comedian who will also send invitations to artist friends to participate in the event.

A true ambassador

Mathieu Salvail and Étienne Dano agree that Karl Tremblay really promoted disc golf in Quebec before his death. “He brought the name of this sport to the media mainstream [de masse]says Mathieu Salvail. The word disk-golf was even pronounced by the Prime Minister!”

“People loved Karl with love,” he continues. When you have someone like him who was interested in this sport, it piques your curiosity. Unfortunately, he left us too quickly, because I think he could have helped even more by talking about it.”

People who want to discover disc golf will be able to play for free, with a voluntary contribution, on October 26 at the Phoenix. The event organizers will give $5 for each participant who comes to play a round. They hope to donate $5,000 to cancer research at the end of the day.
