Urgent appeal from motorcycle rider associations in the face of the security crisis

The Association of Motorcyclists for Collective Well-being (AMOBIC) and the National Union of Three-Wheel Motorcycle Drivers (SNCMTR) deplore the impact of the socio-economic and security crisis on motorcycle taxi drivers and ask the authorities concerned to resolve the security crisis in order to facilitate the return to life in the country.

During a press conference held this Thursday, May 9, members of the AMOBIC and SNCMTR committee drew the attention of government authorities to the consequences of the deterioration of the security climate on the Haitian population, in particular on the lifestyle of thousands of motorcycle drivers.

The president of AMOBIC, Jonet St Élois, recalls that motorcycles are their livelihood and is saddened by the fact that the deterioration of the security climate has forced motorcycle drivers to abandon their places of activity, others have lost their motorcycles and found themselves unable to provide for the basic needs of their families.

The trade unionist also denounces the numerous abuses to which motorcycle drivers have been subjected for a number of years. “We suffer abuse from law enforcement agents and are often considered bandits. And the bandits sometimes take us for lookouts, they often kill or take away our motorbikes,” he says.

Mr. St Élois deplores the fact that they are one of the categories most affected by the artificial scarcity of petroleum products. He seeks a subsidy for all motorcycle drivers and urges the resigned government to facilitate the distribution of fuel at gas pumps so that they can do without the black market which sells gasoline at exorbitant prices. While inviting the Presidential Transitional Council to resolve the crisis prevailing in the country.

For his part, the spokesperson for AMOBIC, Jean Kenson Chéry, criticizes the delaying tactics of the members of the presidential college, who shortly after their installation launched into a fierce struggle for power. Thus, he warns each advisor not to put their clan interests over those of the population.
