Prices continue to decrease in May 2024. This is what our price statement from the last West-France basketcarried out in an Auchan hypermarket located near Le Mans (Sarthe).

The total amount of our shopping cart, made up of around thirty everyday consumer products (excluding promotional offers, distributor brands and national brands combined), decreased by -0.3% between April 2024 and May 2024, in particular thanks to the drop in the price of butter.

Still not at the level of early 2023

However, our West-France basket does not return to its level before the inflationary period: if prices have been falling for several months, the selection still costs + 7% more expensive in May 2024 than in January 2023, this due to very strong increases, for example on the orange juice (+43%!), but also chocolate, yogurt or Camembert, pasta…

Note also that many products making up our selection since January 2023 have seen their packaging change. Thus ravioli or dishwasher capsules, which it is no longer possible to find sold with the same weight as last year.

Products such as Viennetta frozen dessert or Chocapic cereals have seen their prices increase, while the volume sold has been revised downwards.

Shrinkflation

To better deal with this hidden inflation at the national level, from July 1, consumers will be able to clearly see, thanks to small posters, if one of the products on the shelves has seen a drop in quantity and if its price has been lowered. unchanged or increased.

Inflation in France slowed in April, to +2.2% year-on-year, according to provisional results communicated Tuesday April 30, 2024 by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (Insee).
