A first glimpse of what the M4 chip has in its belly! Evolution or revolution?

As with each launch of a new chip, first benchmarks appear on the web a few days before marketing.

First scores for the M4 chip!

The first benchmarks unearthed in the Geekbench database often proved to be accurate and close to the values subsequently obtained with the test machinesbut you must still take the figures to be followed with caution, while you can verify them.

On Geekbench 6, the claimed scores of the full M4 chip with 10 CPU cores (including 4 efficient and 6 efficient) and 10 GPU cores show a nice 3,767 points on a single core and 14,677 points when all the cores on the chip are used.

If we compare with the scores we obtained with the different generations of Apple Silicon chips (all in full versions with all CPU cores), we see a gain of 43.8% on a single core and 46.3% in multi-core compared to M2which is roughly what Apple announced during the presentation of the iPad Pro M4.

If we compare the M4 chip to the M1 chip, we obtain a gain of 61.6% on a single core and 76.7% in multi-core. In the same exercise and facing the recent M3 chip, theThe M4 scores represent a gain of 18.8% on one core and 21.74% when all cores are used.. Remember that an evolution of plus or minus 20% remains very interesting from one generation to the next.

Of course, the M4 chip now has 10 CPU cores, compared to only 8 on previous generations, which actually implies a gain in multi-cores. To finish on the CPU part, note that the iPad Pro with 256 and 512 GB of storage will be satisfied with an M4 chip equipped with 9 CPU cores (1 less efficient core) and 8 GB of RAM (10 CPU cores and 16 GB for versions 1 and 2 TB) and therefore lower scores.

What about GPU and AI?

According to the basis of. Geekbench data, the new 10-core GPU on the M4 chip has a Metal score of 53,792 points.

Compared to the M2, the M4 GPU offers a gain of 15.4%, and 13% when we compare the score of the last chip to that obtained with the M3. The gain remains interesting from one generation to the next, although lower than what Apple announces. Indeed, Cupertino mentions a GPU up to 4 times more efficient in the iPad Pro M4 than in the M2 version, but this is a test which highlights the hardware acceleration of ray tracing, absent on the M2.

When we talk about AI, the Neural Engine of the M4 chip offers a score of 9,234 points under Geekbench ML.

Here, the gain compared to the M3 chip in the same exercise is 15%. This allows us to see a constant evolution between the different generations of Apple Silicon chips, without however any real revolution for the latest one. Note however that the full version of the M3 Max chip allows you to obtain a score quite significantly higher than that of the M4 (+18.2%), and that this benchmark is still in beta, with stability in the results. which is not yet up to par with other versions of Geekbench.

On our side, we can’t wait to welcome this new chip to the editorial team in order to check what it’s really worth on our test benches. We will soon publish our own results and analyses.
