The Daily Mail reports the setbacks with nitrous oxide of a Premier League footballer, whose anonymity has been preserved. The latter had to call for help.

His anonymity has been preserved. According to the Daily Mail, a Premier League footballer, whose career led him to represent his country in the U21 team, suffers from a severe addiction to laughing gas (nitrous oxide). His addiction prompted one of his relatives to call help in April, who found the player at his home surrounded by canisters of the substance.

During this visit, emergency services allegedly found him unconscious after trying to wean him. The possession of this substance for inhalation is prohibited in the United Kingdom, the police are said to have attended the scene. However, no prosecution was initiated. The club would be aware of the situation and would provide its full support to help the player improve his health.

The misuse of nitrous oxide (normally used for whipped cream siphons, for example) is a scourge that has not spared football. Several players have already caused controversy in the past for having been seen inhaling “proto” balloons.

Serious risks

Consumers find it a cheap way to get a feeling of euphoria and sensory distortions. But the risks are numerous and serious: asphyxiation from lack of oxygen, loss of consciousness, burns from the cold of the expelled gas, disorientation, dizziness, falls, neurological, hematological, psychiatric or cardiac disorders.

In France, law no. 2021-695 of June 1, 2021 prohibits the sale or offering of nitrous oxide to minors. Its sale is prohibited in drinking establishments and tobacconists. The sale of balloons and “crakers”, to facilitate the extraction of the product, is also prohibited.
