Visitors had to evacuate hotels in knee-deep water, while shops and medical centers closed due to rapidly rising waters.

Saritdet Charoenchai, public health official, said the victims included a 44-year-old man who was electrocuted and a 33-year-old woman who was swept away by a mudslide. More than 80 people were moved to temporary shelters while nearly a dozen medical centers were forced to close.

The flooding is mainly due to the flooding of the Ping River, which reached historic levels overnight from Saturday to Sunday. Thousands of residents had to be evacuated, and Chiang Mai Central Station is currently closed.

These floods follow several weeks of torrential rains and the passage of Typhoon Yagi in mid-September, exacerbating the situation. Twenty provinces in Thailand are currently affected by these floods.

Rescue operations also saved more than a hundred elephants from the Elephant Nature Park, although two elephants were found dead on Saturday.
