The trend is confirmed. The price of coffee beans continues to rise. In the space of twelve months, the price of Robusta grain has increased by 60%. If for the moment this increase is felt more by Swiss roasters, coffee lovers are likely to taste it too, in the near future. A situation which would be completely new, according to the president of the umbrella organization Cafetiersuisse, Hans-Peter Oettli. The latter indicates in the “Aargauer Zeitung” that the price increases for green coffee have so far had very little impact on consumers’ final bill, emphasizing that rents and salaries weigh more in the balance.
That said, the price of Robusta coffee beans could fall soon, if Vietnam’s drought ends and harvest prospects improve again this year. To counter this climatic dependence, a new phenomenon is emerging within the coffee market. More and more companies are turning to “fake” coffee, made from residues from other food production processes. Manufacturers are therefore seeking to imitate the taste of real coffee using ingredients more resistant to climate change, such as roasted date seeds.
