South Africa: death toll rises to 7 in building collapse

The collapse of a building under construction in George, South Africa, on Monday killed at least 7 people. While several construction workers were extricated from the rubble, dozens of others are missing.

Rescue operations considered delicate continued on Tuesday.

“First, we do what we call a line scan. You walk the entire area looking for possible screams from victims. We actually heard people screaming in the rubble. So that was the first point, then the dogs come in and do a check. Once the dogs have identified a person, we have high-tech equipment that allows us to triangulate and locate where the victim is trapped, and. From there we start working. It’s very, very difficult if you’re working with breakers and drills and that sort of thing,” said Colin Deiner, chief disaster services director for the company. Western Cape province.

A total of 75 people worked on this site. South African police have opened an investigation to determine the causes of the collapse.
