We were afraid of running out of games to play in this rather calm month of May, and Supergiant Games decided to celebrate Christmas early. Hades 2 is available in early access since May 6, and highlights its new heroine, Melinoe.
Who is she, what is her goal, and do you absolutely have to play Hades before tackling this second episode? We explain all that to you in this article.
Who is Mélinoé, the Princess of Hell?
If the Melinoe known in the texts of Greek mythology is only a relatively secondary character and we have little information about her, in Hades 2, he is indeed the star of the adventurelike Zagreus in the 1st episode.
Hades 2 is happening quite a few years after the events of Hades, and the world as we knew it no longer has anything to do with it. The Titan of Time, Kronos, came to attack the family of the Kingdom of the Dead, seize the house of Hades, and declare war again on the gods of Olympus. Hades has been taken prisoner, and we have no news from Zagreus and Persephone.
In the middle of this hell, Melinoe is the daughter of Hades and Persephone, and therefore the sister of Zagreus. Same green and red eyes and same strong character as his brother, no doubt about it. She was just a baby when Kronos attacked her family, and was saved by Hecateher Mistress and mentor with whom she now resides at the Crossroads, and trains night and day with one goal in mind: death for Kronos and revenge for his family.
Do you have to have played 1 to understand Hades 2?
The game takes place many years after the first episode, and the narrative work accomplished by the developers is so good that you don’t necessarily need to have played Hades to enjoy Hades 2. Of course, playing the first one is a plus, you will have references, you will see places and characters that will be dear to you. But you won’t be lost for a single second in terms of the plot if you haven’t played 1.
It’s a new masterpiece brought to us by Supergiant Games, and we’re only in early access, which “already has more content than the final version of Hades”. In other words, several dozen hours await you in this new adventure led by Mélinoé, keeping the basics of the first episode and adding so many new features that you will dive in and enjoy it with your eyes closed.
