Collapse in South Africa: at least six dead and 47 workers trapped under the rubble (photos)

LOn Monday, a building collapsed in South Africa, killing at least six people. A toll that could sadly change because 47 workers are still trapped under the rubble.

Rescuers are redoubling their efforts this Tuesday to find 47 trapped workers. “They have been down there for more than 24 hours now, that’s already a long time,” declared provincial Premier Alan Winde during a press briefing in the afternoon. He adds that this second day is critical for finding survivors. Some were able to call to report. “We asked them to regularly turn off their mobiles to conserve their battery.”

Getting these localized people out could take the better part of a day. Then, it will be time to clear the rubble floor by floor. For the moment, rescuers must cut through the layers of concrete which weigh several tonnes and then lift them, a long and delicate job.

In total so far, 28 people, including the six deceased, have been pulled out of the rubble.
