Red Egg tomatoes, mini Red Egg and Chica – Rémi Drussé, Hoogsteder:

At the beginning of May, Hoogsteder – a subsidiary of the Dutch group The Greenery, specializing in the sale of F&V on the French market – is entering the tomato campaign with its three flagship references: the Red Egg, the mini Red Egg and the Chica.

Three varieties that the company intends to highlight on the shelves of major retailers and French wholesalers. “These three references are complementary and each have their strong points. The Red Egg is a tomato that stands out from others by its very elongated shape and its intense red color which makes it a characteristic tomato on the market. The mini Red Egg is very popular in France because it is very sweet. It has little water content, which makes it a very pleasant tomato in the mouth, with a longer shelf life despite its high Brix degree. It has slightly thick, drop-shaped skin. As for Chica, the “top of the range” cherry tomato with a very high Brix degree, it is very popular during the season,” reports Rémi Drussé account manager at Hoogsteder.

After a smooth start due to unfavorable weather, the Red Egg and the mini Red Egg are now present in quantity: “We now have the interesting volumes to open the lines in large distribution and the expected coloring to satisfy the French consumer. Another advantage that sets us apart from our colleagues is that we have exclusivity on these varieties and have developed visually differentiating packaging which allows the tomato to stand out on the shelf. In other words, you can’t miss it! “.

Leek: “skyrocketing prices” in the face of a lack of supply
Alongside tomatoes, Hoogsteder also markets other vegetables such as leeks from the Netherlands, which are currently very popular: “France faces major quality problems when it comes to leeks. There are mounting problems and aesthetic irregularities which cause poor performance over time. The situation is not ideal in the Netherlands either, but we are lucky to have better weather which promotes better quality. We can provide departures. And of course, faced with this significant demand and the limited volumes available, prices are soaring.”
