National Day of Remembrance of Slavery, Trafficking and Their Abolitions in Vitry-sur-Seine

May 10 is the national day of remembrance of the slave trade, slavery and their abolition. The mayor and the municipality invite you to the commemoration, Friday May 10, from 6:30 p.m., Esplanade de la Mulâtresse-Solitude.

May 10 marks the day of memories of the slave trade, slavery and their abolitions. From the 15th to the 19th centuries, more than 11 million men, women and children were captured in Africa, transported across the Atlantic and enslaved to work in harsh conditions on colonial farms in America.

The date of May 10 commemorates the adoption of the law tending to recognize trafficking and slavery as a crime against humanity of May 21, 2001, also called “Taubira law” after the name of the former minister. of Justice.

By this law, the French Republic recognizes that the transatlantic slave trade as well as the slave trade in the Indian Ocean on the one hand, and slavery on the other hand, perpetrated from the 15th century, in the Americas, the Caribbean and in the Indian Ocean against African, Amerindian, Malagasy and Indian populations constitute a crime against humanity.
