Critique Vol.13 Dandadan – Manga

In the merciless battle against the invaders, Vamola came to lend a hand to her friends, but is the victim of a formidable blow. While she is seriously injured, her memories are dispersed to her friends who become aware of the tragedy experienced by the young alien, and the reasons for her presence on Earth…

We are in a strong Dandadan arc, where the stakes gradually grew while Yukinobu Tatsu offered an absolutely crazy start to the battle in terms of intensity, visual impact and compositions. A delight, quite simply, which only becomes more pronounced with this 13th volume which lifts the veil on the mysteries around Vamola.

Unusual thing in the series: a long flashback takes up more than a third of the book, in order to bring us revelations which give full meaning to this arc initiated since the arrival of the young alien in her kaiju suit. His story is deeply tragic and human, faithful to the tones that the author likes to develop when it comes to giving substance to his characters. The flashback is also an opportunity to develop part of the scope of the universe of the work, an infinite richness which could be exploited by multiple stories across the cosmos. The mangaka opens the way to countless possibilities through the story of a people who constantly sought to survive in the face of the invader, a story which also evokes the dramatic current events in the Middle East where invasions and barbarities are taking place. with complete impunity. Such a story is timeless, and that is what makes this beginning of the volume touching.

Light being shed on the foundations of the arc, the author takes the opportunity to resume an intense battle from start to finish. The difficulty being the number of characters in the action, Yukinobu Tatsu honors his bet hands down by giving each one a precise role, even a few small moments of glory and drama in order to make the stakes of such a confrontation even higher. . Through this invasion, it is a sword of Damocles that hovers over the small group. We are then ecstatic in front of the author’s superbly composed plates while keeping within us the fear of the after-effects that such a fight could leave. And in terms of surprises, the mangaka will not spare us until the outcome of the battle, as the last pages offer a twist in the situation that is certainly expected, but extremely effective. A rendering linked to our affect for the characters and for the universe set up, but also thanks to the visual flavor that is Dandadan.
