Since childhood, Rebecca has always found time to read and imagine stories. This resident of Bénodet (Finistère) publishes, self-published, her first work in the world of fantasy: Karukera.

“An idea I’ve had for years”

A graduate of a literary baccalaureate with a theater option, she fell into the world of writing by chance in 2010. A waitress in a restaurant, she saw her activity interrupted in 2020 due to the health crisis. That’s the trigger. “I wrote a dystopian duology, an idea I had for years,” describes the young woman.

During a trip to Guadeloupe in 2022, the scene for his first novel is set. You don’t find many fantasy stories about tropical islands. Most are inspired by Celtic legends and the Middle Ages. The discovery of the island greatly inspired me, particularly Pointe-Noire.

Karukera means Guadeloupe in the Caribbean language. The story is that of a mercenary, Nea, who spends her days fulfilling missions sent by the queen and acquiring precious and rare goods for her pirate clientele.

“Prove to myself that I could do it”

Most of the writing took me two months. My biggest challenge with the release of this book was to do everything with my own hands, I wanted to prove to myself that I was capable of it,” explains Rebecca Cornec.

Rebecca wanted to keep control of this self-published book, which she has already translated into English herself in order to broaden the range of her future readers because the story, for her, has only just begun.

Practical: Karukera, €19.90, in bookstores or on the internet. From 15 years old.
