Kees Schouten, from Altena Potatoes (Netherlands):

The potato season from Malta is going well this year at Altena Potatoes. “Prices remain high. Therefore, sales are slightly lower than in other years, but thanks to the high prices we are satisfied with the result,” says Kees Schouten. “Until now we had the Health variety, but it sold out pretty quickly. We’ll start with the Alphas next week. »

In Malta, plantationss have declined by about 20% this year. The reason is the huge demand for agricultural land for apartment construction. “Despite everything, we have already received around twenty trucks. With the good weather, I hope that sales will pick up well,” continues the potato wholesaler. It markets most of Malta’s potatoes on the market and to wholesalers and supermarket customers.

“The supply of imported potatoes on the market is not very large at the moment. Supply from Israel is very limited due to the war. Egypt suffered from brown rot, and Morocco sent almost all of its trade to Russia. Everyone is waiting for the Spanish arrivals. These are now also coming at high prices, but are not quite ready yet. Agria’s exports to Spain are also doing very well, despite the high prices. »
