British actor Bernard Hill has died this Sunday, May 5, announced his agent, Lou Coulson. The actor, mainly known for his roles in Titanic and in the trilogy of Lord of the RingsEast died at the age of 79.

In James Cameron’s cult film, released in 1997 and winner of 11 Oscars, Bernard Hill played the role of Edward Smith, the captain of the famous liner. The Manchester-born actor also appeared in The Lord of the Rings. He interpreted the King Théoden in the Peter Jackson saga in the early 2000s.

As the BBC recalls, the actor joined the cast for the second film, The Two Towers. He was also present in the last opus of the trilogyThe king’s return, winner of… 11 Oscars. Bernard Hill also made appearances in At the sources of the Nileby Rob Rafelson, or in Found guiltyby Clint Eastwood.

Bernard Hill came to the attention of the British public in the early 1980s by starring in the television series Boys from the Blackstuff. The actor was due to make his return to the screens this Sunday, with the start of broadcasting the 2nd season of the series The Responder.
