Before you start reading this article, we would like to warn you that it includes many spoilers on the story of Baldur’s Gate 3. So, if you don’t want to know what happens there , avoid reading what follows…

Throughout your adventure through Baldur’s Gate 3, you have only one very specific goal: to get rid of the larva that is in your brain and which threatens to transform you into a mind flayer. However, here is a character who only dreams of that.

This character from Baldur’s Gate 3 just wants that!

Here, the character in question is Karlach, but then, who is she? Well Karlach is a character we meet pretty early on in Baldur’s Gate 3, and if we have the chance to kill her, we can also make friends with her and make her become one of our companions. We’re not going to lie to each other, but she is one of the players’ favorite characters, and if we get easily attached to her, she only wants one thing: to transform into a mind flayer, but then, why?

If you didn’t know, Karlach does not have a normal heart but a diabolical machine which threatens to explode, which means that she is, whatever happens, condemned to death. And at some point in the game, you will have to face a terrible decision: become a mind flayer and thus, lose your character and your class to in reality learn new skills and therefore become someone else, or make one of your companions suffer this fate. You will have understood, but this is where Karlach comes in!

On the social network Redditthe player responding under the nickname of Mklby1998 explained that Karlach’s inner monologue exists, and since she is doomed to die, her deepest wish is to turn into a mind flayer. When that happens, that’s when it makes its appearance.

I’m still the same, aren’t I? I’m still me…? Yes and no. But somehow, I think it was intentional. Maybe not the tentacles, but… something else. And my machine. She…is…silent. Still there, but no longer threatening to explode. No pain. No gears. A calm that I haven’t felt in a decade – or even that I haven’t felt at all. This means that I will live. I will live. I’ll… I can stay alive. I have the right to stay. Fuck, yes!

According to Mklby1998, few people make this choice and therefore almost no one is aware of her real wish and above all, almost no one knows this inner monologue which therefore seems well hidden.

Also on Reddit, players seem happy with this new discovery, and some have also explained that it allows for new discussions about souls and the afterlife of characters.

Furthermore, a majority of them think that this choice with regard to Karlach is the best that there could be since basically, she had to die.
