The song that could lead to Trump’s trial

Could it be that Y.M.C.A.the timeless and global success of the Village People, contributes to the conviction of Donald Trump in the case of the post-election conspiracy which targets him? Since 2020, the former president often arrives on the stage of his electoral rallies to the rhythm of this song while performing a few dance steps. On January 6, 2021, he didn’t dance before giving his famous speech urging his supporters to fight like hell and march to the Capitol. But this speech had indeed been preceded by Y.M.C.A.

For special prosecutor Jack Smith, this musical choice proves that Trump’s speech was not part of his official acts, and is therefore not protected by the presidential immunity from criminal prosecution that the conservative majority of the Supreme Court has defined in its controversial decision of July 1. It was an electoral activity of a private nature, Smith clarified on the 121st page of the voluminous file made public Wednesday and presented last week to federal judge Tanya Chutkan in Washington to convince her to give the green light to the trial of Trump in this matter. I quote the key passage:

“Furthermore, the defendant’s appearance was a campaign rally, not an official event. The crowd at the rally consisted of the defendant’s political supporters, who held signs and wore clothing displaying the defendant’s campaign slogans. The manner in which the defendant took the stage at the rally was also consistent with his campaign rallies: instead of entering while a military band was playing Hail to the Chiefas he might have done at an official presidential event, the defendant entered and exited the Ellipse speech to the songs he used throughout his campaign (God Bless the U.S.A. by Lee Greenwood and Y.M.C.A. des Village People). »

Who could have predicted such a role for a song whose lyrics explore the social and sexual opportunities offered by Christian Association hostels to a young gay man newly arrived in a city?
