Météo services have issued an orange alert for the “rain-flood” parameter concerning Southern Corsica. Haute-Corse is placed in yellow. The alert will begin on the night of October 2 to 3.

This Thursday, October 3, the whole of Corsica is affected by meteorological vigilance for the “thunderstorms and rain-flood” parameters. The alert will be in effect tonight, from 3 a.m. in both departments.

Météo France services have placed Southern Corsica on orange alert between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m.; Haute-Corse remains, for the moment, in yellow, with “meteorological situation to monitor”.

“At the end of the night from Wednesday to Thursday, rainstorms coming from the Balearic Islands affect Corsica, indicate the prefecture of Haute-Corse in a press release. These rains, sometimes stormy, will be organized in lines oriented southwest/northeast. This is fairly heavy rain, of the order of 30 to 40 mm per hour, which can affect the same area for 2 to 3 hours.”

According to Météo France forecasts, the expected accumulations over the entire island will be between “30 and 50 mm widespread”.

“On a large southern half of the island, including coastal areas, accumulations could reach 60 to 90 mm, very occasionally a little more”specify the forecasters.

Yellow vigilance is active until 4 p.m. at the earliest this Thursday in both departments.

On the afternoon of October 3, the rains are expected to move towards Italy. “In the evening and night from Thursday to Friday, new stormy showers, coming from the Gulf of Genoa, are expected, mainly in the north of the island, but significantly less active”specifies Météo France.

The prefecture calls on the population to be extremely vigilant and reiterates the precautionary instructions:

  • Do not enter, on foot or by car, on a submerged path.
  • Respect the diversions put in place.
  • Do not take shelter under trees.
  • Respect the instructions given by the security services.
  • Avoid walks in the forest and outings in the mountains.
  • In flood-prone areas, protect furniture from water and monitor rising water levels.
  • Do not walk along the banks of rivers located downstream of dams.
  • Listen to the radio station France Bleu RCFM and France3 Corse ViaStella.
