According to a study by the National Institute of Demographic Studies, couples where the woman earns more than her partner run “a higher risk” of separation, 11% to 40% more compared to couples with equal salaries. Indeed, when a man earns less than his partner, this poses a problem.
Before separating, Anaïs earned twice as much money as her husband and this difference was no longer supported by his companion when they had children. “There was a lot of criticism from him. I think there was frustration,” she explained. Delphine, before leaving her partner, had been forced to change her attitude so as not to offend him. “We don’t talk too much about salary, we try to avoid saying that you earn a good living. We are a little more extinct for allow it to take more place at the social level”she indicated.
For his part, Abdallah has already seen one of his friends adopt a new behavior when his partner earned more than him. “He is looking to change positions […] Maybe the man thinks he’s late and needs to try harder. That’s why it creates a little tension,” he said.
This increase in the risk of separation is not only linked to the frustration of certain men, it is also because women, being richer, have the means to leave their husbands.
