JD Vance, Republican senator from Ohio and Donald Trump’s running mate for the 2024 presidential election, has recently tried to soften his image. During the vice-presidential debate against Tim Walz, Kamala Harris’ running mate, he claimed to have “never supported a national ban on abortion.” A surprising statement to say the least, given that in the past, Vance has spoken out in favor of a complete nationwide ban on abortion. He even supported the idea of preventing women from traveling to states where abortion would still be legal.

A double-edged “pro-family” image
This sudden change of heart could be explained by the growing unpopularity of the Republican position on abortion. In the United States, the issue has been divided since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, sending the decision on abortion access back to the states. Result ?
