The victim’s brother confirmed that Mario Omar Sanguinez Lopez was found guilty of the capital homicide of Victor Masson on Tuesday by Mexican authorities. The Saguenéen was 27 years old when he was killed in an altercation that occurred outside the bars.
“According to article 291 of the Penal Code of the State of Oaxaca, this carries a sentence of 30 to 40 years in prison,” said the victim’s brother, Édouard Masson, in an exchange with The DailyTuesday evening.
The murderer was charged a few days after the events. The trial opened in Mexico a year later, in April 2024. The victim’s brother was the first to testify at the trial. He did it by videoconference, from Saguenay.
Mario Omar Sanguinez Lopez, who proclaimed his innocence, was represented by three lawyers.
“Although relieved by the judge’s verdict, our family has mixed emotions about the future of the trial,” said Édouard Masson. “Indeed, the defense team will have 10 days to appeal the decision,” he added. The next hearing will take place on October 8.
Victor Masson was traveling in Mexico with his partner when he was shot and killed in a car.
