The young 18-year-old rider died following a fall on Thursday September 26 in Zurich, during the world Cycling championships.
We know more this Tuesday, October 1, about the circumstances which led to the tragic death of Muriel Furrer, 18 years old. The young Swiss cycling champion died Thursday, September 26, following a fall during the junior event, plunging the peloton into strong emotion. On Monday evening, the Swiss authorities delivered the first elements of the ongoing investigation.

“Swiss cyclist Muriel Furrer suffered serious head trauma during her fall,” Zurich canton police and the Public Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement. “After initial treatment, she was transported by rescue helicopter to the University Hospital of Zurich, where she died the next day from her serious injuries.”
The dramatic fall occurred on a bend, on the edge of a forest in Küsnacht, north of Lake Zurich, while the asphalt was very wet due to the heavy rains which had affected the region in the previous days.

Currently, no images exist of the accident; no witnesses saw the scene either, according to authorities at this point.
The authorities’ press release confirms one of the most dramatic circumstances of the accident. The young woman remained heavily injured and apparently unconscious for a still undetermined period, lying on the ground in the forest after her fall. The reason: without images or witnesses, and without an earpiece (which would have allowed Muriel Furrer’s team to raise the alarm), a period of time passed before the authorities became aware of the young woman’s disappearance .

“The security services surveyed the route after the race, looked for her and then found her in the forest,” declared the spokesperson for the Zurich Public Prosecutor’s Office.
