The system can deliver gas to Bulgaria, Romania, North Macedonia, Serbia, Moldova, Hungary, Slovakia and Ukraine, Gastrade said.

The terminal will be supplied with gas from the United States, Qatar and Egypt, Kiril Ravnachki, general director of the Bulgarian company Bulgartransgaz, which owns 20% of Gastrade, said Tuesday in a joint statement from the participating companies.

It is “an essential initiative to strengthen the energy security of South-Eastern and Central Europe and its independence from Russian natural gas”, underlined a press release from Gastrade during a visit by ambassadors from the EU last week.

In December, a 170-kilometer gas pipeline between Bulgaria and Serbia was inaugurated to deliver Azerbaijani gas, with officials saying it could be connected to the Alexandroupolis terminal.

Turkey, very dependent on Russia and also seeking to diversify its supplies, for its part announced on September 18 an agreement for its national company Botas to receive liquefied natural gas from the French group TotalEnergies for 10 years.
