15 people were inconvenienced by the smoke from the fire which broke out last night in Verniolle.

An intervention in the middle of the night. The Ariège firefighters intervened at 1:30 a.m., on the night of Monday September 30 to Tuesday October 1, for a fire in the Château nursing home in Verniolle.

SDIS09 was deployed after the alert given by the establishment’s fire safety system and two nursing assistants on the scene. The fire started in an unoccupied room, approximately 90 m2, where clothes were stored.

44 firefighters deployed

Numerous means were implemented to thwart the disaster: three vans, a ladder, four ambulances, with a mobile command post, three group leaders and a column leader. No less than 44 firefighters were on the scene at the height of the operation. Also present on site were the mayor of Verniolle, Annie Bouby, as well as a representative of the Regional Health Agency (ARS) and a member of the cabinet of the prefect of Ariège.

Fifteen people were harmed by smoke in the fire. Two caregivers and a resident, more affected than the others, were evacuated to the emergency room of the Ariège Valleys Intercommunal Hospital Center (Chiva). Residents were relocated to a partner establishment in Saint-Jean-du-Falga and others taken care of by the ARS.

The fire, limited to the room from which it started, was brought under control at around 3 a.m. by firefighters. Some soot was also dispersed outside the room. “There were big flames, the fire was well established when we arrived, but the incident was taken into account quickly and the intervention of the firefighters quickly allowed the fire to be brought under control,” says one of the side of the Ariège SDIS.
