International Labor Day will be celebrated this 1er May 2024. In Senegal, the question of workers’ conditions is also on the agenda. Guest of Midikeng on PressAfrik TVHD, this April 30, Magatte Ngom evokes the responsibility of the State in this sense.

“In these types of celebrations, it will be necessary to have discussions with the workers, in particular to inform them about compliance with the legislation and the environment of their work. In general, grievance lists are not scrutinized. Because if that were the case, employees and interns would not sometimes be poorly treated,” the trade unionist said. He added: “There are also expectations in their working conditions, particularly in employee advancement and benefits. They do not have certain benefits, such as leave and social security, among others. Sometimes all this is not done.”

For Mr. Ngom, the State must do everything so that every Senegalese has a decent job. “Social evasion is the fact that those who must contribute to social security, to other social contributions, do not do so. In this case, the State of Senegal loses a lot. Now for the State to benefit, it must defend work.”

Reminding the new Minister of Labor of the issues of working conditions, Magatte Ngom stressed that this aspect remains “a priority for the new regime”. “Every time we hear from a minister on this case, it is in the National Assembly. If we have a good minister, aware of the issues, we will be able to have a strong labor sector. 9 out of 10 workers work in the informal sector. The view of the State is also important to protect workers,” he maintained.
