The world’s major oil and gas giants have known since “at least” the 1960s that fossil fuels would cause global warming, but they persisted in denying it and even practiced disinformation. according to a report.
“For more than half a century, ‘Big Oil’ has deceived the American public about its role in the climate crisis, doing everything in its power to keep the United States and the entire world dependent on their polluting products,” denounces the report of a commission of inquiry of elected Democrats from the House of Representatives, published Tuesday.
“Big Oil” are the six giants and organizations scrutinized during this investigation launched in September 2021: ExxonMobil, Chevron, BP America, Shell, the American Petroleum Institute (API) – representative of the oil sector – and the Chamber of Commerce .
“All six (…) obstructed and delayed” this investigation by refusing to submit “despite subpoenas”, underlines the 65-page report entitled “Denial, disinformation, and double talk: evolution of the efforts of the ‘Big Oil’ to dodge responsibility for climate change.
