PARIS (Agefi-Dow Jones)–Inflation in France slowed further in April, to 2.2% year-on-year, according to provisional data published Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (Insee) .
Consumer prices increased by 2.3% year-on-year in March and 3% in February.
In April, “this slight drop in inflation could be explained on the one hand by the slowdown in the prices of food and tobacco, on the other hand by the slight drop over one year in those of manufactured products”, indicated the institute.
Over one month, consumer prices increased by 0.5% in April, after 0.2% in March. “This acceleration would be due to the increase in the prices of services, in particular transport and other services”, underlined INSEE. “Energy prices would fall again over one month, but at a slower rate than in the previous month, while those of manufactured products and food would be almost stable,” the institute said.
The harmonized consumer price index, which allows comparisons between European Union countries, increased by 2.4% year-on-year in April, as in March. Over one month, the index increased by 0.6% in April, after 0.2% in March.
