Sayonara : Miyoshi Umeki got rid of her Oscar

Actress Miyoshi Umeki won the precious statuette for her role as Katsumi, the submissive wife of American aviator Red Buttons. Her Oscar made her the first Asian actress to win the trophy. Although she subsequently played other roles, she retired in 1972. Shortly after the death of her husband, Randall Hood, in 1976, Miyoshi Umeki engraved his name on her Oscar and then threw the trophy away. Even today, her son doesn’t know exactly why she got rid of it, although he told Entertainment Weekly that the circumstances of her life at the time – as a single mother raising a teenager – probably didn’t help.

Sayonaraa popular success

Sayonara was widely praised by critics, particularly for its storyline, as well as for the acting talents of its performers. He has also won four Oscars out of his ten nominations. The film was number 1 at the US box office for five consecutive weeks in 1958. It grossed $10.5 million in the States and Canada and $5 million overseas.
