World Contraception Day: What if men got involved too?

It’s World Contraception Day. A burden still largely borne by women. However, male contraception solutions exist. We talk about it with sexologist Rosa Carballeda.

You probably know about the pill, the implant or the IUD. But did you know that there are also male contraception solutions like heated underwear for example? They are much less known and are struggling to become more widespread. We talked about it this Thursday morning on Bleu Pays de Savoie on this World Contraception Day. Rosa Carballeda is a sexologist at the Médipôle clinic in Chambéry. She sees more and more men who are asking themselves the question of contraception and in particular vasectomy: “There has been a gradual evolution over the last 5 to 7 years. Our young people want to control when they are going to have a child, both men and women.” For her it is a question of generation.

Among the existing methods, vasectomy is the best known. The operation “the simplest” according to the doctor. The number of vasectomies has also increased significantly over the last 12 years: it has increased 15-fold between 2010 and 2022. Heating underwear is less well-known, but has the advantage of being reversible, like the contraceptive ring. According to Rosa Caballeda, there is no secret: for male contraception to become widespread, resources are needed, in particular to inform and prevent the general public, especially young people!
