The return to God of Professor Amadou Mahtar Mbow has plunged our country into immense pain. Beyond Senegal, it is Africa and all those who are in love with justice, throughout the world. The man with multiple, just and useful battles, has generously marked the march of humanity. A committed inspirer for the New World Order of Information and Communication (NOMIC), while he was Director General of UNESCO, Professor Mbow very early on urged the planet to become aware of the challenges of information and communication, in a world undergoing profound change.
After having engaged the UN body in a necessary battle for balance in the access of all regions of the world to the immense resources of information and communication. Amadou Mahtar Mbow was also at the heart of the fight for knowledge and the valorization of the history of Africa. Despite his advanced age, he had agreed to chair the work of the National Conference in 2008, a crucial moment in Senegal’s great march for a democratic model that lives up to the aspirations of our people for freedom and dignity. In these moments of mourning, I offer my heartfelt condolences to the grieving family, to the entire Senegalese nation, to Africa and to the entire international community. May God reserve for him a welcome worthy of his colossal work in the service of humanity.
