This Sunday, April 28, is World Day for Safety and Health at Work. For the CSC, work accidents are not inevitable and can be avoided through better consultation on the prevention of accidents and illnesses. Unions therefore have a role to play because for the CSC in companies where there is a union presence, there are fewer accidents.

On the eve of World Day for Safety and Health at Work, the CSC organized a strong action to represent the 10,000 workers who, in 2022, were victims of a work accident in the province of Liège. Four people have died, 1,200 will remain disabled throughout their lives, this is the case of Tony, who worked in the steel industry and who unfortunately lost the use of his hand. “Following three weeks of working in continuous at night, I was finishing my cycle and I was tired because of the pace of work and therefore I was unbalanced and my hand was stuck between two rollers. Following my accident, we was able, with the union delegation, to note a whole series of dysfunctions which we were able to resolve so that this would no longer happen in the end.” says Tony Diliberto, a steel worker.

The most accident-prone sectors are personal care, in hospitals, nursing homes, followed by construction and finally transport and logistics.. “If we see cross-sectionally, the temporary sector is really the most affected and moreover the highest risk profile, it is a temporary man between 20 and 29 years old” explains Thomas GERARD, permanent interprofessional and prevention advisor at the CSC Liège-Verviers-Ostbelgien,

An action which also aims to recall the importance of consultation in matters of accident prevention and the role of the union delegate in ensuring compliance with legislation in this area. “With the social elections taking place in May, we are setting up consultation bodies in the company and these consultation bodies, particularly in terms of safety at work, identify places at risk in the company with the energy advisor. prevention and must take measures to ensure that accidents do not repeat themselves. explains Jean-Marc NAMOTTE, the federal secretary CSC Liège-Verviers-Ostbelgien,

In 2024, the prevention and protection at work committees will be renewed. As for the social elections, they will take place between May 13 and 26 in 516 companies in the province of Liège.
