Margrethe II: Former Queen of Denmark Hospitalized, Her Son King Fredrik X Says More About Her Health

Margrethe II is unwell. The former Queen of Denmark, aged 84, was hospitalised on 19 September. Indeed, she is said to have fallen at Fredensborg Palace in Copenhagen. The monarch is experiencing back pain. This is a sensitive area for her. Indeed, she had already had back surgery in February 2023. “Given the circumstances, the queen is fine. But she was still admitted for observation,” revealed the Palace’s communications officer, Lene Balleby.

Shortly after her hospitalization, King Fredrik X spoke to reporters. He said that his mother was
“in good hands and that the royal family was managing the situation on a day-to-day basis.” The monarch clarified that doctors were the only decision-makers.

The former queen was spotted the day before her accident

As previously announced, Margrethe II will not attend the 75th anniversary of the Department of Archaeology at Aarhus University on Friday, September 20. Margareth II was last seen in public on Wednesday, September 18. She attended a conference on multiple sclerosis. The mother of King Frederik X appeared to be in good health, although she walked with her cane.

At the beginning of 2024, Margareth II had decided to abdicate, explaining that time had
“wreaks havoc” about her health. She also revealed that she was suffering from “ills” which had increased with age. “I have decided that the time is right. On 14 January 2024 – 52 years after succeeding my beloved father – I will step down as Queen of Denmark. I leave the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederik.”the Sovereign had specified.

“Margrethe II is the very embodiment of Denmark”

Margrethe II had thus wished to thank the royal subjects:
“Tonight, I want first of all to thank you. Thank you for the immense warmth and support I have received over the years. A thank you to the various governments, with whom it has always been rewarding to work, and to the Danish Parliament, which has always welcomed me with confidence,” she had confided.

Many personalities reacted to this historic announcement, including Mette Frederiksen, the Prime Minister:

as a people and as a nation
she said in a statement. Her son Frederick X and his wife thus became King and Queen of Denmark.
