The horse, named Kristo, aged four, suddenly collapsed due to “an illness”, Le Trot and the Vire racecourse stated in their report, before dying instantly.

In the seventh race of the day, the Prix des Bénévoles, Kristo was unshod on all four legs, which reflected the great confidence of his trainer.

However, his victory, with odds of 183 to 1, came as a real surprise to punters as the animal had never done better than 6e on his previous races.

Unfortunately, after crossing the finish line, the horse collapsed on the track. The vet could do nothing to save him and had to declare him dead.
