Portugal under fire. The country is currently affected by forest fires in several regions. In an attempt to save what can be saved, European aid has been requested. Portugal wants “the support of the European Civil Protection Mechanism” to obtain the reinforcement of four pairs of amphibious aircraft.
“We will urgently mobilise eight firefighting aircraft,” responded European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on the social network X, thanking France, Greece, Italy and Spain for their “rapid reaction”.
Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro said in a statement that he was following “the coordination of the fight against the fires” and remained “in contact with its European partners.”
Several injuries to be deplored
One person was burned alive, while the other suffered a heart attack, the National Civil Protection Authority told local press.
