New in your supermarkets. From the July 1, 2024, small posters will certainly adorn the aisles of medium and large department stores. They will allow you to identify at a glance the products that are victims of shrinkflation (reduflation in French).

Already in force in certain brands, a decree of April 16, 2024 makes it obligatory consumer information relating to the upward trend in the prices of products having suffered a reduction in quantity.

It will be published “in the coming days”, assures the office of Olivia Grégoire, Minister Delegate in charge of Consumer Affairs, at -.

More transparency when making your purchases

Packets with fewer chips inside, smaller and smaller containers, less juice for an unchanged bottle… If you are likely to still see some in stores, at least you will be informed.

Hiding the reduction in quantity while increasing the price or leaving it unchanged remains in fact a authorized business practice.

But the order aimed at pointing the finger at brands practicing shrinkflation risks changing the situation. Because the consumer will be immediately warned.

How will it work?

This information must be provided by distributors in the large and medium sized areas“in the immediate vicinity of the products concerned”, specifies Bercy.

It must appear in these physical stores during the two months following the date of marketing.

The products concerned

The products concerned: food and non-food manufacturers. “Bottles of soda, packets of rice, laundry detergent or cans”, illustrates the government as an example.

And this, whether it concerns products of national brand or store brand.

Those who escape the display

On the other hand, prepackaged foodstuffs, the quantity of which may vary depending on the
preparation (deli section for example) and foodstuffs sold in bulk are not affected by this measure.

Beyond the information of shrinkflationthe display will allow you to have information on the evolution of the price of the product concerned.

“The indication must in particular specify the evolution of the price in relation to weight, so that the consumer knows the true evolution of the price,” indicated Bruno Le Maire, Minister of the Economy, in the press release.
