Shapovalov caused one of the first upsets at Wimbledon with a 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 victory over Chilean Nicolas Jarry.

Shapovalov had nine aces in the match and broke the 19e seeded on four occasions, while saving both break points against him.

The Ontario native and former world top 10 player hit 29 winning shots compared to 19 for Jarry.

Shapovalov, 25, started the match at 121e ATP ranking. He will now face German Daniel Altmaier, who showed the exit door to British Arthur Fery in five sets of 4-6, 7-6 (6), 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Last year, Shapovalov reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon. He already reached the semifinals in 2021, losing to Serbian and eventual champion Novak Djokovic.

Andreescu then made short work of Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian, winning 6-4, 6-2.

The 24-year-old Ontario player had three aces, including the last on match point, and broke Cristian four times in nine chances.

The 2019 US Open champion also had 10 points from 11 attempts at the net, facing just one break point – which Cristian converted, however.

Andreescu returned from injury at the French Open after missing 10 months with a back injury. She then began the grass-court season by reaching the final in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.

Andreescu will now face No. 26 Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic, who defeated Italian Sara Errani in two sets, 7-6 (3), 6-1. The Canadian has never made it past the third round at the All England Club.
