Resignation? That’s what De Bruyne says

It was too early to make a decision immediately after the end of the game against France. But the signs point to a farewell.

It was too early to make a decision immediately after the end of the game against France. But the signs point to a farewell.

After the European Championship exit, Kevin De Bruyne has left his future in the Belgian national football team open. Was the 0-1 (0-0) defeat in the round of 16 against France in Düsseldorf his last game for his country? “It’s too early to say,” De Bruyne replied. “Let me process this first. I’ll stay calm and think carefully,” said the Manchester City star.

The 33-year-old has been one of the best midfielders in the world for years, but with the eternal dark horse Belgium he always lacked that certain something to win a major title.

Last season, De Bruyne was injured more often, and in an interview with Het Laatste Nieuws he warned: “Next year will be a very special year with City with around 85 games. That’s a lot.”

De Bruyne made his debut for the national team in August 2010. He played his first major tournament at the 2014 World Cup, when he had a strong season at Werder Bremen and was about to move to VfL Wolfsburg. In Russia in 2018, he played the most successful tournament with Belgium, but only came third after a defeat in the semi-finals against France.
