TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) – With temperatures in the single digits Wednesday morning, it took awhile to get the heat going for some schools in west Alabama.
Tuscaloosa City Schools had two or three locations where portable heaters were needed to warm things up.
Tuscaloosa City Schools Superintendent Dr. Mike Daria spent the better part of his morning making sure all classrooms had adequate heating. He found three locations that needed immediate attention.
“Three buildings with parts in each of the buildings, so we got partners in one building where we have 7 classrooms out and we have either moved those classrooms to other places in the building where it’s warm or we provide portable heaters, so those classrooms are warm,” said Dr. Daria.
All par for the course when you run a school district with 21 buildings. Dr. Daria has long had a plan in place when a cold snap is on the way. He requires all school administrators to check the building and the heating system before the cold hits and before school is dismissed for a day or two such as the case this week.
“And also do an early morning inspection and we also have an incredible facilities team that studies the numbers on the operations to make sure our schools are operating where they need to be,” said Dr. Daria.
-All in all, a smooth re-start for the city school district one day after being out; no classes were delayed and no one fell behind, according to Dr. Mike Daria.
