MOTM Poll: Dortmund Grant Bologna Their First Ever UCL Win

With names such as Gio Reyna and Julien Duranville in the starting XI, nobody quite knew what to expect from Dortmund at the legendary Stadio Renato Dall’Ara in Bologna on Tuesday night. Unfortunately, BVB delivered exactly what fans feared—another lackluster display against an on-paper inferior opponent. BVB just can’t seem to win games at the moment, and the trend continued after a very anonymous performance in the Emilia-Romagnan capital. Performances like these have been more or less the norm during Nuri Sahin’s stint at Borussia Dortmund, and I honestly don’t see the Turkish coach survive this one. At this point, this is not even BVB underperforming—it’s just how bad the team is these days. Apart from Guirassy’s penalty, The Black and Yellows delivered absolutely nothing over the course of these 90 minutes. There have been many bad periods in the last 10 years, especially under Peter Bosz and Edin Terzic, but I don’t think it’s a stretch to claim that this team is in it’s worst shape it has been for a long time.

Does it make sense to pick a MOTM? Probably not. There are a lot of other much more important things to address at the moment. Just cast your vote and let me hear your thoughts about the current state of the club/team at the moment.

Gregor Kobel

I think Kobel did as much as he could tonight. He had a couple of decent saves, and he couldn’t really do anything about either of Bologna’s goals. What I’m most afraid of is how he probably sees his future elsewhere with BVB being in this downward spiral at the moment, but that’s an article for another day!

Nico Schlotterbeck

Nico Schlotterbeck was both very good and kinda bad today. What he was good at was clearing the absolute barrage of crosses from the Italians. What he was bad at was being properly placed when Bologna was playing through the middle. He also had some pretty scary moments in build-up where he let the ball slip a couple of times, but I do believe Bologna would have had another goal if not for Schlotterbeck’s performance tonight.

Serhou Guirassy

Man… Now we’re really getting to the bottom of the barrel. Yes, Guirassy converted a penalty tonight, but he also had an abundance of sloppy giveaways and didn’t manage to win many duels against his direct opponents. I still believe this guy is a very good footballer, but he also needs more service and more runs from his teammates. At least he didn’t flop around like a fish tonight.

Julian Ryerson

Was Ryerson good tonight? Nah. Probably a five out of ten performance. Does he show fight and willingness to win? Absolutely. If every player on the field had this guys mentality, I guarantee you we would win much more than we’re currently doing. Nmecha probably could’ve nudged himself into these nominees as well, but I choose Ryerson, because I simply like him.
