Patrick Mouratoglou summed up Tommy Paul’s defeat to Alexander Zverev at the Australian Open.
The American’s latest campaign at Melbourne Park came to an end on Tuesday following a defeat to the World number two in the quarter-finals.
Tommy Paul will certainly rue his missed chances against the German, who is into the last four in Melbourne for the second successive year.
In the process Alexander Zverev defeated Paul for the first time in his career, and won his 30th Australian Open match.
How did Patrick Mouratoglou assess Tommy Paul’s defeat to Alexander Zverev at the Australian Open?
Paul was unable to capitalise on certain moments against Zverev as he committed some untimely errors in sets one and two in their Australian Open quarter-final.
He was unable to take a set point in both sets and world number two took full advantage and dominated two tiebreaks to take the lead.
Though Paul began to make a comeback, it was short-lived as Zverev claimed a 7-6(1), 7-6(0), 2-6, 6-1 win.
After witnessing Paul’s missed opportunities, Patrick Mouratoglou took to social media platform X to summarise how Zverev toughed it out and took the tie breaks and ultimately the match, despite not playing his best tennis.
“The match between Zverev and Paul shows once again how much tennis is a mental game more than anything else,” wrote Mouratoglou, the former coach of Serena Williams who now works with Naomi Osaka.
-Who will Alexander Zverev face next?
Zverev will face either Novak Djokovic or Carlos Alcaraz in the Australian Open semi-finals.
Zverev has won six of his 11 contests against the Spaniard, while he has claimed four of his 12 meetings against Djokovic.
The pair always bring out the best in Zverev and he is ready to play against one of them for a spot in the Australian Open final.
“Two of the best players that probably ever touched a tennis racquet,” Zverev said regarding the quarter-final. “Novak is the greatest of all time right now.
“Carlos is going to be one of them when he hangs it up, so it’s a clash of generations. They have played Grand Slam finals before.
“They played in the Olympic final last year, so it’s a privilege to witness it here in Australia… I think it’s going to be a great match.”
