After a crazy game on Tuesday, FC Barcelona secured progress in the penultimate round of the Champions League league phase, just like Atlético Madrid and Atalanta Bergamo. Leverkusen and Dortmund suffered bitter defeats.

Bologna – Dortmund 2:1
Nuri Sahin is unlikely to survive the fourth defeat in a row as coach of Borussia Dortmund. The statements from sports director Lars Ricken, among others, seemed too clear after the weak start to the year. But despite the demand for “experiences of success and victories”, BVB achieved little success in the Champions League.
Although the Bundesliga club took the lead in Bologna thanks to a penalty from Serhou Guirassy, the hosts turned up the heat significantly after the break. And at some point even the strong Gregor Kobel in Dortmund’s goal could no longer prevent the equalizer. Thijs Dallinga scored this in the 71st minute – shortly afterwards Samuel Iling Junior turned the game around completely.
BVB no longer had an answer to the double blow in Bologna, in which Remo Freuler and Dan Ndoye were in the starting line-up and Michel Aebischer was missing due to injury. After slipping in the Bundesliga, Dortmund also fell back in the premier class and is now in 13th place. For Bologna it was their first ever win in the competition.

Benfica Lisbon – Barcelona 4:5
The almost 65,000 spectators in the Estadio da Luz got a lot for their entrance fee. In the pouring Lisbon rain, four goals were scored in the first half hour. Benfica started brilliantly thanks to a goal from Vangelis Pavlidis. Robert Lewandowski managed to equalize for the guests from eleven meters, but the Greek Pavlidis had two more goals in his kitty.
After the break, things continued to be similarly spectacular. First Raphinha shortened the score for Barça, then Ronald Araujo scored in his own goal to make it 4-2 for the hosts. But the Catalans didn’t give up and came back with another penalty – again scored by Lewandowski. In the final phase, the equalizer was actually achieved and when everyone had already prepared to share the points, Barcelona’s Raphinha stole away from everyone again and secured victory in the 96th minute with the ninth goal of the game.

Atlético Madrid – Leverkusen 2:1
Leverkusen suffered a painful 1-2 defeat at Atlético Madrid. The Bundesliga team with Granit Xhaka lost points themselves. Until shortly after the break, everything looked like a success for Leverkusen, who not only led 1-0 but were also able to have the advantage.
In the 52nd minute, Julian Alvarez turned things upside down when he scored the 1-1 with Spain’s first shot on goal of the game after a counterattack via Antoine Griezmann. A quarter of an hour before the end, the Germans also gave up their numerical advantage because Piero Hincapie, the goalscorer to make it 1-0, received a second yellow card. Alvarez scored in the 90th minute to give Atlético a win.
This means that Leverkusen is only sixth in the table, while the Spaniards are now in third place and are already safely in the knockout round. On the last matchday next week it will be decided whether Atlético will secure direct qualification for the round of 16 or have to take the detour via the intermediate round.

Liverpool – Lille 2:1
Liverpool FC is still flawless. The “Reds” got their seventh win in their seventh Champions League game – but had to fight hard for it. The OSC Lille fought bravely and fought against the defeat even when they were outnumbered. Shortly after Aissa Mandi was sent off, Jonathan David canceled out Mohamed Salah’s opening goal.
But Arne Slot’s team restored the lead a few minutes later thanks to Harvey Elliott’s goal, maintaining their lead at the top of the table over FC Barcelona. Direct qualification for the round of 16 can no longer be taken away from Liverpool or the Catalans.

Unlike the other two German clubs, VfB Stuttgart was able to report success. Fabian Rieder, a Swiss man, also helped. The 22-year-old was used for the first time this year and thanked coach Sebastian Hoeness for coming on as a substitute in the 70th minute with a goal. Shortly after Slovan Bratislava’s goal, Rieder made the final score 3-1. Jamie Leweling scored Stuttgart’s first two goals before the break.

Monaco – Aston Villa 1:0
AS Monaco with the two Swiss national players Breel Embolo and Denis Zakaria maintains the chance of direct entry into the round of 16 of the Champions League with a home win against Aston Villa.
The 1-0 winning goal in the penultimate round of the league phase was scored by defender Wilfried Singo, who, like Zakaria, returned to the team in crisis after an injury break. Thanks to the success against the eighth team in the Premier League, AS Monaco, coached by former YB coach Adi Hütter, is now level on points with Aston Villa in 10th place.

There were more goals to be seen in Belgrade. In a lively game, PSV Eindhoven prevailed with three goals thanks to a strong first half. Red Star Belgrade was able to make the game exciting again, but it wasn’t enough to do more than score. This means that the Serbs are now definitely eliminated, while PSV Eindhoven plays against Liverpool on the last matchday for progression.
