GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – Something new seen this winter from the National Weather Service, are Extreme to Cold Weather Alerts. Which, are in place across the area this week.
It’s a new set of warnings put together, issued from the National Weather Service and here’s what you need to know: The new set includes: Extreme Cold Warning, Extreme Cold Watch and Cold Weather Advisory.
Action is needed to be done when an ‘Extreme Cold Warning’ has been issued. This means, dangerously cold air temperatures or wind chills are expected or currently happening. It is suggested to avoid going outside during this time. Although, for those that have to go outside certain actions should be taken such as: dress in layers, cover any skin that is or may be exposed to the cold, and make sure others know about your actions outdoors.
When an ‘Extreme Cold Watch’ is issued, this means to be prepared. A watch will be issued when dangerously cold temperatures or wind chills are possible, according to NWS. National Weather Service suggest, as same with an Extreme Cold Warning, to adjust any outdoor plans made during the coldest time of day. Also, make sure your car gas tank is filled to at least half, and make sure your winter survival kit is up to date and ready to go.
-Last but not least there is a ‘Cold Weather Advisory’ which means to be aware. An advisory is issued when seasonably cold temperatures or wind chill values, but not extremely cold values, are expected or happening according to NWS. Once again, be sure to dress accordingly for the temperatures and cover any exposed skin when headed outside.
