You held up well up to a certain point, what was missing?
“I think that in terms of attitude I can’t blame these guys for anything, the game was broken by a great play by Lautaro. It was balanced, but up until then they had created little, and they were good at making us work lower than what we had prepared. Then when you concede a goal you raise your center of gravity and the regret increases for the management of the third goal, resulting from a free kick in our favor. This is the attitude I wanted, it’s not easy to come to San Siro to play against great champions. What I could have done was let Lautaro out in the 60th minute but obviously that wasn’t possible (laughs, ed.).”
Esposito why not from the first minute?
“He is doing things never seen before in his career, both he and Saba (Goglichidze, ed.) didn’t do all the training with the team this week. Sebastiano is playing with more consistency than in the past, in the past I haven’t always been able to manage him and I can’t afford to lose a player like him due to injury. We played both tonight, but then we also play on Saturday: there are only a few of us up front and I have to dose my energy a bit. Having said that, he must improve in some aspects that he knows: if he is not at Inter but at Empoli it also depends on him. He is doing important things, also thanks to his teammates who put him in a position to exploit his characteristics.”
One point in six games, what makes you think positively about the future?
“I would respond that we still have twenty points: at the start of the championship no one could have imagined it at this point, we have to think about the fact that the results are failing despite the performances. In many matches we complained about the result, both against Genoa and Lecce. Despite the terrible twenty minutes, we also had the chance to reopen it against Lecce. The episodes have not rewarded us, we must work so that they help us bring home the results by enhancing the performance”.
Where did you grow up?
“Watching Milan’s subsequent matches, we caught them at the worst moment and went onto the pitch intimidated. We showed courage, both against Napoli and Atalanta. Tonight the boys tried, then even the fact of lowering ourselves was not a tactical choice, but linked to the skill of the opponents. I have to say that I can’t blame these guys for anything. We have to think about the fact that before the third goal we still reopened the match against Inter and it’s not easy: they have champions and substitutions that in some cases improve those who are already on the pitch. This attitude would probably have led us to achieve results in the last few games, we must bring it back to the pitch in the following games as well and return to getting results. It’s the only medicine that makes everything go away.”
